Inoperable Vehicles

WHAT IS AN INOPERABLE VEHICLE?

Definition: Inoperable Vehicle
A vehicle that cannot be driven upon the public streets for reason, including but not limited to being unlicensed, wrecked, abandoned, in a state of disrepair, or incapable of being moved under its own power.

IPMC 302.8- Motor vehicles 

Except as provided for in other regulations, inoperative or unlicensed motor vehicles shall not be parked,
kept or stored on any premises, and vehicles shall not at any time be in a state of major disassembly, disrepair, or in the process of being stripped or dismantled. Painting of vehicles is prohibited unless conducted inside an approved spray booth.
Exception: A vehicle of any type is permitted to undergo major overhaul, including body work, provided that such work is performed inside a structure or similarly enclosed area designed and approved for such purposes.
 


 

Removing junk vehicles from your property is essential for several reasons.

  •  Safety - Junk vehicles can pose safety risks, such as attracting pests, sharp edges, and hiding spots for thieves or rodents. By removing them, you can create a safer environment for your family and visitors.
        

  • Environmental impacts - Soil, water and air contamination can result from storing junk vehicles. Leaks from oil, fuel, lead acid batteries and other components are very harmful to the environment and property.   

     

  • Legal Compliance - Fines and penalties can result from storage of inoperable unlicensed or "Junk" vehicles.
     

•    Call your local and neighboring jurisdiction tow companies and junk yards to see who can come and get the vehicle off your property. At times, some companies will come and take them away for free. 
•    Contact your Local Code Enforcement Officer to have a Junk Vehicle Affidavit filled out prior to the vehicle being towed off the property. 
•    Vehicles are not allowed to be parked in the yard(front, side, back yard) on a non-improved surface.
